On May 30, 2023, the City Government of Bacoor, under the leadership of Mayor Strike B. Revilla, and the Bacoor City Information Office, in partnership with Hope in Me Club headed by Dr. Tina Alberto, organized a one-day workshop on Media & Information Literacy for Student Leaders and Campus Journalists of the City of Bacoor. The event was held at Revilla Hall, Bacoor City Hall, and was attended by 42 schools from the City of Bacoor.
Mayor Strike B. Revilla expressed his gratitude to the organizers and speakers for their efforts in promoting Media and Information literacy in the City of Bacoor. He emphasized the importance of responsible journalism and the role of media in shaping public opinion, particularly in today’s digital age.
The event featured well-known speakers who discussed the topic of Understanding Media & Philippine Society, including the 5 core concepts of Critical Media & Information Literacy. Mr. Ariel Sebellino, Executive Director of the Philippine Press Institute, emphasized the importance of responsible journalism and how to spot and combat fake news in the digital age. Mr. Barbie Atienza, President of United Print and Multi-Media Group Health Break, and Mr. Gab Billones, Founder & President of Break the Fake Movement, shared their expertise on media ethics and critical analysis of media texts.
In addition to these speakers, Mr. Marlon Nombrado, Co-Founder of Out of the Box Media Literacy Initiative, talked about Critical Media & Information Literacy and its 5 core concepts. He highlighted the importance of media literacy in promoting a healthy and informed society. Mr. Marco M. Polo, Associate Professor of the Communication & Journalism Department at De La Salle University-Dasmariñas, discussed the School or Community-Based MIL Campaign and its impact on promoting media literacy in its communities.
The event also featured speakers Rodina Pangilinan and Dennis Paguio. Ms. Pangilinan, a licensed professional teacher, shared her knowledge on the importance of Cybersecurity, Transformative Technologies, and Digital Governance. Mr. Paguio, an accomplished media professional and a proponent of media literacy, shared his experience as a certified ASEAN Digital Literacy Program Master Trainer, providing individuals with the necessary skills to navigate the media landscape.
The seminar was a success, with participants expressing their appreciation for the opportunity to learn from media and information literacy experts. The City Government of Bacoor and its partners hope to continue organizing similar events in the near future to promote Media Literacy and responsible journalism in the City of Bacoor and beyond.
