Edilberto Evangelista was born on February 24, 1862 in Sta. Cruz, Manila. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Colegio de San Juan de Letran and was awarded a medal of excellence in Mathematics. In 1890, he went to Europe and met many Filipino patriots like Jose Rizal who advised him to take up engineering in Belgium. Recognizing his potential with the field, he eventually enrolled at the University of Ghent and finished civil engineering and architecture with highest honors. He was known for his calmness and bravery and was considered as the great engineer of Philippine Revolution. Because of his contribution to the Battle of Zapote Bridge, one of the main thoroughfares in Bacoor City was named after him.
